Fall: Select from one of the following two healthcare focused seminars:

FYW-1217: Autism and Technology (which fulfills the first-year writing seminar graduation requirement) offers a focus on understanding the experience of autism, a developmental disorder affecting communication and social interaction, from multiple perspectives, and how to design and use technology systems to support these individuals. Explore how autism affects individuals across the life-span and a spectrum of abilities. Critically examine current technical and non-technical approaches to supporting individuals with autism and their caregivers, and design new educational and assistive technologies for autism.

FYW 1282: This is your Brain on Drugs (which fulfills the first-year writing seminar graduation requirement) introduces students to the neurobiology of addiction and stigmatization of addiction. Basic neurobiology and the addictive properties of various drugs such as nicotine, alcohol, cocaine, and methamphetamine will be covered. Discuss whether or not food can be addictive and examine how addiction is portrayed in the media.

You do not enroll in a specific class for the spring semester but instead participate in coordinated field visits led by the Pre-Health advisors to local healthcare facilities to gain a greater insight into how the healthcare system works, learning firsthand from local and national healthcare experts. Organizations may include the Greenville Health System, The Hawkins Foundation, National Healthcare Corporation, and Greenwood Genetics. ​​
