Policies Furman University

Our comprehensive program offers traditional sources of financial aid, as well as scholarships. These scholarships and grants, combined with federal and state assistance, enable most qualified students to enjoy the benefits of one of the nation's premier liberal arts universities. Each of these assistance programs have established criteria and requirements that students must meet to be eligible for an award. Review these policies to ensure you know what you need to do to maintain your eligibility.

Satisfactory academic progress

Federal regulations mandate that higher education institutions establish minimum standards of satisfactory academic progress. Please note that many of our institutional scholarships and grants follow the same federal Satisfactory Academic Progress standards and policy. Review our standards.

Code of Conduct

Furman has established a code of conduct for its financial aid officers, employees and agents. Read our code of conduct.

Fifth year scholarship exception

Extraordinary circumstances may warrant an extension of a student's institutional scholarship or grant into a ninth semester. Usually, this is due to documented disabilities and/or medical diagnoses that preclude a student's ability to complete his/her degree program in eight regular (Fall and Spring) semesters. Changing majors and similar occurrences are not reasons for extending a merit/academic/talent scholarship or a Furman Grant past the eighth semester.

Students may request an extension by emailing Dr. Forrest M. Stuart, AVP for Enrollment Management and Director of Financial Aid; please note that the email must provide details about the reason for the extension request as well as supporting medical/disabilities documentation.
