Copyright in the Digital Collections Center

The Digital Collections Center shares Furman's institutional commitment to comply with the intent and provisions of copyright law as set forth in U.S. Code Title 17.  In addition, we adhere to Furman's copyright policy and we encourage our partners and collaborators to familiarize themselves with these documents.  Potential collaborators should review our summary of the typical interactions between Digital Collections Center projects and copyright, which incorporates our copyright agreement form.

Potential collaborators should know the copyright status of materials that are to be digitized. We can sometimes assist in determining copyright status, but the parties that own or acquire materials are typically in the best position to determine or provide this information. In some cases, digitizing and providing access to copyrighted materials for the purpose of teaching, scholarship or research may constitute permissible fair use.  Furman's Copyright Office can assist in determining copyright compliance.

When copyright status and publisher information are known, we include them in each digital object's metadata. Typically, we also add a small, non-intrusive copyright statement onto the bottom of copyrighted images that are added to the Digital Collections Center's collections.

Other Sources of Digital Objects

While the Digital Collections Center's collections are constantly growing, the library's media LibGuide contains links to additional sources of digital objects that may enhance your teaching, learning and research.
