The mission of Furman’s Department of Computer Science

Our mission is to make outstanding educational opportunities in computing available to all Furman students through a dedicated faculty, state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, and impactful engaged learning opportunities including undergraduate research, internships, and significant class projects, all with an emphasis on inclusive excellence.

Our program presents a broad-based and current view of the computing field within the liberal arts context. Our courses and programs are intended to impart to both majors and non-majors an appropriate depth and breadth of knowledge to prepare them to be effective and responsible users of computing knowledge and technology in their chosen professions. In addition, the Department seeks to create an inclusive environment within which majors will experience a sense of professional community and gain an understanding of the importance of lifelong learning within the computing profession. These activities are central to our goal to mentor and develop a more diverse and inclusive community of future STEM professionals.

With a Computer Science or Information Technology degree from Furman, you’ll be prepared to pursue an advanced degree or a career at some of the nation’s top businesses.

Our program prepares graduates to:

  • Apply algorithmic thinking to any type of problem.
  • Utilize systems thinking skills to craft technological solutions.
