Furman University Startalk Dates: July 5-19, 2015
If you're a high school student who has studied Chinese for at least one year, one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the country's language and culture is to spend a summer with us. Every year, we host STARTALK, a nationally funded program that is designed to improve the teaching and learning of languages that are strategically important, but not widely taught in the U.S. This two-week residential camp offers you an environment where you can build your language skills, connect with students and experience Chinese culture.
Our faculty and experts will expose you to China's rich history and culture during this two-week program on Furman's campus. You'll have numerous opportunities to practice Mandarin through conversations and activities with your peers and instructors. Your time will include opportunities to:
- Live and learn with native Chinese language teachers and undergraduate Chinese-speaking camp counselors.
- Connect via webcam with Chinese high school students in Suzhou, China.
- Experience Chinese culture through cooking, Tai Chi, dance and games.
- Explore the Greenville area on language-focused field trips.
STARTALK is free to students from any state or country. We ask participants for a $400 deposit, but that fee is fully refunded at the conclusion of the program. Housing and meals are included. You'll need one year of Chinese language experience to participate in the program.
