Furman’s Sociology department combines a strong undergraduate research program with an emphasis on the liberal arts.

Our students develop their sociological imaginations by learning to identify, understand, and question the relationship between personal experiences and larger social patterns. They explore qualitative and quantitative research methods, the collection of empirical data, the understanding of various statistical techniques, and the analysis of numbers and data. Our students also hone their abilities to write, think critically, and see the big picture. We offer a diverse range of opportunities for students to engage in both collaborative and independent research while encouraging a sense of community between faculty and students. Whether you’re planning on pursuing graduate work or a career in the social sciences, a sociology degree from Furman will provide you with marketable skills to help you succeed.
